Naiko's Room Devlog - Chapter 1 Announcement and Discussion + a bunch of sneak peeks

Hey hi ho hu hello random people, how are you doing on this fine wednesday?

Yes, to everyone's shock, this game is still alive! The cake is not a lie! Woohoo.

Now, for the 1,6 people that saw the announcement for the remade demo (and buried it somewhere in their consciousness), you may be laying and a dinner table, eating with your family some grilled cheese, and then a very specific set of shapes and colors makes you think: "Hmm, I wonder what happened to the funny clock game?"

Well, the remaster of the demo is... gone! Kind of.

Choose your own imaginary adventure

Actually, the remaster kinda went into a cocoon of sorts and came out in a new, beautiful shape, which is now Chapter 1, which is a change that I would like to talk about.

Now, maybe some of you might have seen the, like, 2 clues I’ve left about its presence, and perhaps you might go “Wait, wasn’t this random obscure RPG Maker game supposed to have a much dreaded Full Version?? Why is it chapter based?????” and, here’s the thing.

I am, in fact, the only person working on this thing. I am a hobbyist and this is literally a passion project, so one could expect this game to be a short 1 hour long experience that I’ll move on from after release, right? Huhuhu, w r o n g . This WAS a short 1 hour long experience. In JUNE 2022. From the moment of the concept’s creation, it slowly started evolving and growing into something big, something bulky and ugly, and I want to show it all. The horror of the human mind. The dark side of imagination.

Edgy monologue aside, wanting to do what I want to do will take time, effort, energy, money??? The reality is, making one big project like this by myself would be extremely draining, both physically and mentally. And so, I’ve decided to cut this game in pieces, work on separate pieces and publish them when they are done, and perhaps, putting the pieces together will result in something neat.

(I should mention that this is not a help wanted post, I have no money to hire anyone and I’m super bad at working with people so for now I’ll handle it myself.)

So, here’s the plan, the game will still have 2 main routes (with a neutral/mixed one) and a bunch of endings BUT it will all be separated into 5 chapters. Almost all of them will have 2 ways to end it depending on the route, and at some point will have the opportunity of getting an actual ending (most of them will be in chapter 5 tho).

Thinking about the size this game will end up having, I believe only the first 2 or 3 chapters will be free. From there, you will have to pay an uncertain amount of money and, who knows, when all the chapters will be done, I might be able to publish the full game on Steam!! Maybe, if the platform doesn’t go to shit in the future.

New sprites, same old cringe dialogue

So uh that’s about it. I felt the need to make a post about this game, mostly because it is dead as fuck and I wanna see if there’s anyone around. I’ve actually worked on this first chapter these past months, I just haven’t been showing much progress anywhere.

When it comes to the release date, I am hoping to finish it this year’s fall, although I can’t pinpoint a certain day. September? Not a chance. October? Crossing my fingers. There's still a lot of stuff to do, and there’s no way to tell how the future will go, so I won’t make any promises for now.

Welp, that’s about it, hopefully I was able to raise this game from the back of your mind, and I’m running out of things to say so uhhh Hopefully I’ll see you sometime soon thanks for reading bye.

Have some more not-so-sneak peeks because why not.

this is totally how teenage girls speak trust me bro

the last thing you see before you get crushed by info dumping

Also I need a new catchphrase for this game, the old one doesn’t sit right with me anymore.

Well that seems like an actual fool proof plan, is good to take time to make things the way you want to make them, I have to say maybe monetizing the last 2 chapters is a little bit weird as it would feel like working towards something and then getting blocked, I've seen other games just release chapter one for free and then sell the rest of the chapters in one transaction as just get them as they release, obviously this is just a suggestion.

I actually like receiving chapters every now and then for a game, it feels like when we used to wait a week for a new episode of a TV show, the excitement makes it better.

Whatever ends up coming from this silly clock game metamorphosis I will be happy to wait for it and play it of course.

A state of such logic with no use or purpose, like a clock with no hands...

The commercial part is still super rough at the moment, I've actually never sold a game (or anything, really) so it's clear that I won't know how to approach it.

My approach of it was mostly "oh, you enjoy the story and/or the characters? Hahaha, 7.99$." The first free chapters are meant to let more people try it out, to lure you into the world and afterwards they decide if your interested in the final product or not (it's kinda like a big fat DEMO, and that's pretty much what DEMOs are for)

I do know that the final product will definitely not be free, but there's still a long way to go, so for now I'll do the first chapter and hopefully I'll get more commercial knowledge along the way.

Buckle up, because the road of the silly clock game will be a bumpy one.
